About this course

This comprehensive training programme is designed for health and social care professionals responsible for the safe handling, therapeutic administration and management of medication across a range of care settings.

The course develops the knowledge, confidence and professional judgement required to administer medication safely, minimise the risk of errors and promote positive health outcomes through person-centred, therapeutic practice. Learners will explore the legal and professional responsibilities associated with medication administration while developing an understanding of why safe medication practice is an essential part of high-quality care.

Throughout the programme, learners will examine current legislation, policies and professional responsibilities, different types of medication and their intended uses, the safe management of controlled drugs, and the preparation required before administering medication. Practical guidance is provided on medication administration procedures, safe techniques, infection prevention, record keeping, monitoring individuals after medication has been given, recognising and responding to adverse reactions, and reporting medication incidents appropriately.

The programme also explores the management of PRN (as required) medication, reducing medication errors, competency and accountability, and the importance of accurate documentation to support continuity of care and regulatory compliance.

Recognising that medication administration often requires an individualised approach, the course includes dedicated modules on supporting children and young people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, neurodivergent needs, behaviours that challenge, and those discharged from CAMHS Tier 4 services. Learners will develop an understanding of how communication, capacity, behaviour, emotional wellbeing and therapeutic relationships influence safe medication administration and how reasonable adjustments can improve both safety and the individual's experience of care.

By the end of the programme, learners will have developed the knowledge and confidence to handle, administer and manage medication safely, work within organisational policies and professional boundaries, recognise and respond appropriately to medication-related concerns, and contribute to safe, effective and therapeutic care across health and social care settings.
