Emergency First Aid Through a Trauma-Informed Lens
A comprehensive emergency first aid programme that combines essential life-saving skills with trauma-informed, person-centred practice. Learners will develop the knowledge and confidence to recognise, assess and respond to medical emergencies while providing safe, compassionate care that considers both the physical and emotional needs of children, young people and adults.
About this course
This comprehensive emergency first aid programme has been developed specifically for professionals working in health, social care, education and children's services. It combines nationally recognised first aid principles with a trauma-informed, person-centred approach, recognising that the way first aid is delivered can have a lasting impact on the individual receiving care.
The programme equips learners with the knowledge, confidence and practical understanding required to recognise, assess and respond to a wide range of medical emergencies while maintaining the safety, dignity and emotional wellbeing of the casualty. Throughout the course, learners will develop a structured approach to emergency situations, including assessing danger, responding appropriately, managing life-threatening conditions, providing effective first aid and working confidently with the emergency services.
A key focus of the programme is understanding that every individual may respond differently during an emergency. Learners will explore how trauma, communication needs, learning disabilities, autism, neurodivergence, mental ill health, behaviours that challenge and other complex needs may influence a person's response to illness, injury or physical intervention. The course demonstrates how first aid can be adapted without compromising safety, ensuring care remains compassionate, respectful and responsive to individual needs.
Practical topics include the primary survey, CPR, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), choking, compromised breathing, circulatory emergencies, bleeding, burns, fractures, shock, seizures, anaphylaxis, unconscious casualties, medical emergencies and effective communication during incidents. Learners will also develop the skills to recognise deterioration, prioritise actions, provide clear handovers to emergency responders and accurately record and report incidents in line with organisational procedures.
Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on remaining calm under pressure, making safe and proportionate decisions, protecting the dignity of the individual and delivering first aid that reflects both clinical priorities and therapeutic, trauma-informed practice.
By the end of the programme, learners will have the knowledge, confidence and professional judgement to respond effectively to emergency situations, provide safe and compassionate first aid, and support positive outcomes for children, young people and adults across a wide range of health and social care settings.
